[Playing CTF/e]

You are almost ready to play the best version of CTF to date (in my biased opinion).  CTF/e jumps through hoops to even out the game, teams, and more.   So take a read here to find out how to use the great new features of CTF/e.

[Playing CTF/e offline against Bots]

It seems from the email I get many of you are having problems setting up CTF/e botmatch.  The steps are actually fairly simple.  Once you have installed CTF/e in to your copy of UT, select "Start  Practice Session".  Once the game window pops up, select the "Match" and then select "CTF/e" under Game Type.  I strongly suggest reading the server ops section of this document in order to find out about the different settings ,etc.

[Logon Menu]

When you first connect to a CTF/e server, you will be greeted by the CTF/e Logon menu. Here you can see info about the server, pick a team or enter spectator mode. Note if team balance is in effect, you might not be able to join the team you want to. In the top of the menu, a display showing the current teams and score can be found.

I find the current UT method so annoying as ½ the time, people joining a game have no idea the teams are so screwed. This is actually the reason I made CTF/e.

You can also bring up this menu by typing "emenu" at the console. CTF/e will also automatically bind "emenu" to the scroll lock key. I know damn well I’ll probably run in to one or two people who actually try and use the scroll lock key during play so sue me.

You can press ESC to make the logon menu go away.

I've added a player listing to the left and right of the logon menu.  It makes it really easy to see who is online when you begin.  Also, to help tell who's human and who is not, BOTS are displayed in a different shade.  These lists will not appear if you are running in resolutions < 640x480.  I've also given the menu a overhaul look wise.. like it?

[Advance Scoring]

CTF/e now supports are much better scoring system than vanilla UT/CTF.  This option is configurable by the server so all servers might not support it.  Here is how the new CTF/e scores:

12 Points Capturing the Flag
2 Points Returning your flag
1-10 points Killing someone on the other team.  No matter what, you get 1 point for each enemy you kill.  However you can get up to 9 bonus points for good team work.  Here is how it breaks down.
+1 point Killing an enemy close to your own flag
+1 point Killing an enemy while supporting your Flag Carrier
+2 points Killing an enemy that's aiming at your Flag Carrier
+1 point Killing an enemy that's aiming at any of your teammates
+3 points Killing an enemy flag carrier
+1 point if you deny him a cap (kill him close to his flag)

There is 2x telefrag bonus when you kill with the Translocator.

I'm still tweaking the scoring so if you have suggestions, send them in.

[TITANS]

Ok, I know at one point in time I said I wasn't going to altar the actual gameplay of UT/CTF.. but as I got more in this mod and the more I had fun with it, the more I had to.  Introducing TITANmania!  CTF/e has borrowed from one of my all-time favorite Arcade games PIGSKIN (which by the way if you know where I can buy a working PigSkin machine, email me please..).  For those of you not fortunate enough to ever play this game, let me tell you how it worked.

PigSkin was basically a football game with weapons.  It was a bloody blast to say the least, but the best thing came in when any given team started to blow out the other.  The chanting of "Troll.. Troll... Troll" would blare out and the losing team would get the best bonus possible, a ass-kicking AI control Troll that would cause total havoc on the opposing team.

Well CTF/e has brought this tradition back to life.  SEND IN THE TITAN!

Once a team starts to pull way ahead (server configurable of course) a member of Clan {T}itan will join.  Right now there are only 4 {T}s.. ZugZug, Gartog, Rocko and HandleBoy but that's all that's needed.  Be afraid.. if the other side has a Titanl, you will get hurt, and god help you all if they get 2!

The CTFe Titan's are the best of the best bot AI UT has to offer.  The use weapons, return flags, chuck giant player smashing rocks, cause miniquakes when they walk, and punch and slap the living hell out of you!!!   My Titans are good enough to keep even me at bay (and I'm really good at CTF).   And I improve on them all the time.

Of course, anytime the score ties up, any Titans in the game go elsewhere, looking for other underdogs in the UT universe, but hey.. nothing like a little (well big) helping hand!

[New Commands]

CTF/e has several new commands available to you (as well as some updated ones).  These commands are executed at the console.   To bring up the console, press the ` key on your keyboard (also known as the ~ key).

[console "Team" command]

CTF/e has a new command that can be used at the console "team". It is used to change to a different team or become a spectator. It’s format is:

Team <new team>

Possible values for <new team> are RED, BLUE or Spectator.

Changing teams no longer costs you points or frags. However you will be restricted if team balancing rules are in effect.

[console "ShowPing" command]

This command used to be called "TogglePing". I’ve changed it’s name and format to match my other console commands. The "ShowPing" command is used to turn on/off the on-screen ping display. I personally like to have a good idea what my ping is (especially on Modem) so this is my command J

This value is saved between settings. The usage for this command is:

ShowPing [on/off | 1/0 | true/false]

If you type simply ShowPing at the console, it will display the current setting. You can toggle it by sending in one of the commands above. Where it get’s displayed on the screen is dependant on your current hud layout. It follows the same hud rules as your health and armor displays.

[console "AdvanceZoom" command]

I’ve added this command for my clan mate and friend Mr. Sckum. He’s Mr. Sniper around here and wanted more control over the zoom. Well he got it. When Advanced Zoom is enabled, your next/prev weapon keys will scroll through the zoom levels of the sniper rifle. You will of course have to press ALT-Fire first.

The downside is the next/prev weapons functions are ignored when your zoomed so that’s a small (very small) penalty for using it.

This value is saved between settings. The usage for this command is:

AdvanceZoom [on/off | 1/0 | true/false]

Now I know some of you might whine about spawn campers.. well CTF/e now supports respawn protection so get over it :)

[console "teamsay" improvements]

I’ve added some functionality to the TeamSay command. The UT command menus are impossible to use during a real game so I’ve added the ability to include % variables just like Quake 2. They are:

%L : Location (see below)

%H : Health

%W : Current weapon

%A : Armor

%P : Posture

%% : prints a "%"

All of these should be pretty self explanatory except %P. When you use the %P command, CTF/e will attempt to decide what your current role in the game is. You might be attacking, defending, floating, going after the enemy flag carrier, or defending yours. I’m sure this variable isn’t perfect yet, but it’s a big help.

I've brought the %L variable back to life, but it's not like it was before.  I do not use the current location routines found in UT.  Instead, I find important objects that are near by and use them as descriptors (like in Q2 CTF).  Now you can even call off your locations in Hall of Giants.. go me!

I’m open for suggestions for new variables that people might find useful!

So… for example.. if you typed:

Teamsay "%P with %w and %h/%a" you might end up saying:

"Attacking Enemy Flag Carrier with a Redeemer and 75 health/A Powershield (50%)"

See how nice that is.

[console "Drop" command]

One of the biggest requests I got for CTF/e was to be able to drop ammo.  Anyone who is a real CTF player knows that supplying your FC or defenders with AMMO is critical to Team play.  Well, not only did you get a drop command, but it's pretty damn powerful too.

The format for the Drop command is as follows:

DROP <perc> <type>

Possible Types are: "Rockets", "Goo", "Blades", "Sniper", "Flak", "Bullets", "Pulse", "ASDM", "Shield", "Relic".

I think the different types are pretty self-explanatory.   The <perc> is a percentage of your current ammo-loadout to drop.  It's also optional (if you omit it, you drop 100%).  Some examples:

"drop 20 rockets" - Would drop 20% of your rockets.
"drop 75 goo" - Would drop 75% of your BioGell
"drop Pulse" or "drop 100 Pulse" - drop all of your pulse ammo.

You always drop 100% of your shieldbelt.

[console "EjectAmmo" command]

On the heels of the Drop command comes the EjectAmmo command.  The format is:

EJECTAMMO <perc>

What this command does is drop <perc> percent of the ammo of your current weapon.  It's here strictly for convience.  Omitting the <perc> causes it to drop 100% of your ammo.

[Spectator Mod]

I’ve added a much nicer spectator mode to CTF/e. In order to be a spectator in UT, you have to log off and change your player class. I’ve made it much easier. Just bring up the Logon menu and select spectator or type "team spectator" at the console and bingo, now your just a watching.

In spectator mode, you can watch from the original 3rd person view or switch to the first person. The controls work as follows:

Fire will flip between all the different players in the game.

Alt-Fire will switch between 1st and 3rd person views.

I'm looking for ideas for spectator mode, so if there is something you would like to see in here, let me know.

[Server Browser]

CTF/e is now designed to pretend to be a normal CTF server.  Users no longer need custom configurations.

[Version Mismatch Error]

I'm sorry that you ever have to see this error.  There is a limitation in Unreal Tournament that keeps the auto-download feature from working in an intelligent manner.  Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it.  If you never personally install CTF/e in to your copy of UT, you should never see this error.   However once you download the mod and install it in to your Unreal Tournament (ie: a copy of the .U resides in your /System subdir) then your copy will ONLY ever use that version.  If you try and connect to a CTF/e server running an newer (or earlier) version, it will not auto-download.  Email Epic and request they fix this!

What to do when you get this error depends on what you.  If you want to be able to play CTF/e off-line with bots or host a server, then you will have to make sure you are running the newest version of CTF/e (or more to the point, the version that the server is running).  If you only play online, just never install CTF/e.   Just allow UT to send it to you the first time you connect to a CTF/e server.   Hopefully in the future Epic will fix this major flaw in UT.  With this in mind, I've tried to make CTF/e as small as possible so this shouldn't be too painful (about 3 mins at 56K).
